Dear NJF fan,
It’s the holiday season and I wish for you all to live to be 90 years old like I have – in good health with a good state of mind – because I can’t begin to explain the joy I have in still producing the Newport Jazz Festival after all these years.

As you may have seen on our social media, we’ve already started unveiling the lineup for the 2016 festival. It’s a pleasure for me to announce that Chick Corea is celebrating his 75th birthday at Newport this year with performances on Friday night, Saturday afternoon and at our Newport Festivals Foundation Gala.  Chick Corea’s appearance at the festival is something special, as Chick is from Chelsea, Massachusetts and used to come to my Storyville club in Boston back in the 1950s, when he was a teenager.

Another special moment at our 2016 festival will be Tierney Sutton’s “After Blue” – The Joni Mitchell Project performance. Joni Mitchell first appeared at the Newport Folk Festival in the late 1960s. She was a “new face” at that time and had been brought to our attention by Judy Collins. We didn’t know at the time that Joni would become one of the major stars in the firmament of iconic songwriters.

Another illustrious performer joining us is the energetic and exciting Angelique Kidjo, who has just been nominated for a Grammy for Best World Music Album. Our congratulations to Angelique on this deserved recognition.

We are very grateful to the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation for establishing the George Wein/Doris Duke Artistic Programming Fund, which enables us to ask musicians to commission new works to be debuted during their Newport Jazz Festival appearances. This year’s commission artists are Peter Apfelbaum and Sparkler, Tyshawn Sorey and Alloy, Sullivan Fortner Quartet and Ben Williams and Sound Effect featuring Gilad Hekselman on guitar and Christian Sands on piano. We will be letting you know more about each of these artists, and the rest of the 2016 lineup, on social media. This is just the tip of the iceberg.

Don’t forget flex tickets are still available and will make a great present.  To purchase tickets now, please use the link below. Service charges apply.  http://www.newportjazzfest.org/tickets
