On the Road Again with Lenore Raphael

So far this was a busy beginning of “Early Autumn” (a wonderful tune, by the way) with travel to the beautiful state of Colorado and the green landscape of heavily treed North Carolina. I have always felt very much at home in the land of Pikes Peak and the Rocky Mountains and this time was no exception. Starting with a wonderful concert at The Mezzanine in Colorado Springs I had the pleasure of performing with two of the finest musi-cians anywhere…bassist Ken Walker and drummer Mike Marlier. The sold out venue is a very unique experience. It is a member-generated performance space run by Ms. Linda Weise who is one of the most cul-turally influential people in the area because of her total dedication to running the Colorado Springs Conservatory. I performed and did mas-ter classes at the Conservatory at its inception and have been so pleased to see its continued growth to becoming a major institution whose stu-dents have been on Broadway, joined major opera companies and be-come world class performing artists. The Mezzanine is located at 20 North Tejon Street in Colorado Springs. The next day, I had the honor of being invited to do another master class at The Broadmoor Academy of Music, also iN Colorado Springs. This school, too, run by pianist Brad Bietry, has grown to become a ma-jor school for students to learn to play jazz. I had the pleasure of hear-ing several of the students play and found plenty of talent there. Brad has opened a second school in Colorado Springs because of the growth in the interest in jazz in the area. The Broadmoor Academy of Music is located at 1223 Lake Plaza Drive. One of my favorite jazz stations is KUVO.FM in

The next day I performed at yet another great venue…the Caffe Sole in Boulder. Caffe Sole is a restaurant with wonderful food and the owner Suter Dubose, has dedicated himself to making sure that great jazz is pre-sented in the area. Again performing with bassist Ken Walker was, as always, swinging and fun. Caffe Sole is located at 637 Broadway Street in Boulder. Last weekend I performed in North Carolina with the fine guitarist, Benedetto artist Howard Paul at the Halle Cultural Arts Center in Apex, North Carolina. Howard is a very swinging and lyrical guitarist and I always enjoy per-forming with him. There is something about the guitar that is so per-sonal and warm and I find some kind of mutual attraction with the in-strument and the piano. Howard and I make a lot of music together whether it is just the duo or adding a bassist and drummer, as we did at the Halle with fine bassist Jason Foureman and drummer Peter Ingram. Well, dear reader, soon I will be taking to the road again and this time to cross the pond to perform in England for the Berkhamsted Jazz Soci-ety. Until I report that road trip to you I remain your road warrior Lenore Raphael.
