For George, Cole and Duke

Great Songs by George Gershwin, Cole Porter and Duke Ellington

Harry Allen & Friends

This is really a ‘can’t-go-wrong, back-to-basics, jazz with all the right credentials.

Saxophonist Harry Allen leads a highly competent quintet in interesting and fresh interpretations of favorite standards from three of America’s darling composers.

The drummer is Chuck Redd (ex Charlie Byrd), Israeli Ehud Asherie is in charge of the ivories, Nicki Parrott, an Australian, controls the double bass and of Puerto Rican parents but NYC born, Little Jonny Rivero is the percussionist.

The 13 tracks include: Always True To You In My Fashion; In a Mellow Tone; Silk Stockings, How Long Has This Been Going On? Love For Sale and Mood Indigo.

I asked a jazz-mad friend her opinion on the album and she summed up her experience better than anyone so far has, “I slurped it up like syrup.”

Syrup is an excellent word as this music slides gently through the brain cells.
