CD Review: The Classic Jazz Masters – Jazz Roots

Steven Wade (drums) was born in the UK and began playing drums at high school and in rock bands in South Africa. He took over the kit when co-founder Dave Mills retired.
Roy Burrows UK (clarinet, alto sax, vocals) this quintessential Mancu-nian was classically trained in the UK before moving to RSA and has immersed himself in jazz, especially trad.
Sasha Sonnbichler (banjo, guitar) studied in Vienna and returned to RSA to study both classical and jazz guitar.
A silent but ultra-important partner is sound engineer John Lindemann, who excellence is once again noticed.
The music: Girl of My Dreams; Basin Street; Billy Goat Stomp; Cara-van; All of Me; East St. Louis Toodle Oo; Muskrat Ramble; Christopher Columbus; Sent for You Yesterday and Here You Come Today; I Can’t Give You Anything But Love; Creole Love Call and African Queen.
y4If you are expecting swinging, toe-tapping trad orgy, you won’t be dis-appointed. All musos give their best led by a strong trumpet. The younger members are not to be outdone and both guitar/banjo and drums don’t take a back seat. The older members are veritable rocks on clarinet/saxes, bass and slide trombone. All excel in the ensemble work and enjoy their competent solos. All in all, a great contribution by the CJM to the genre. I am sure the CD will fly off the shelves
The liner notes are first class and Michelle Wade is responsible for the excellent artwork.
